NEW! How you can make your stay more authentic, sustainable and memorable

These tips provide the insider’s knowledge on how travelers can engage with local culture, make their vacations more memorable, promote sustainability in the region, and enhance their overall holiday experience.

  • Maui’s cultural past is cleverly portrayed through a thriving arts scene infused with the spirit of aloha - from the events and exhibitions at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center and the Hui Noeau Visual Arts Center to Art Night every Friday in Lahaina.
  • An exceptional way to appreciate Maui’s unique cultural heritage is to experience a festival or a local celebration event. From The Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Festival taking place in June, Hawaiian Steel Guitar Festival in April to Olukai Hoolaulea in May, the performances are sure to impress all visitors.
  • Maui offers an exotic assortment of savory dining. Hawaii experience will not be complete unless travelers try one of the local dining spots. Often times there are a lot of local restaurants available around the resorts, and by visiting them you are not only going to get a great island experience, but also help local community. To get more authentic taste of Hawaii cuisine, try local favorites in small towns like Wailuku and Paia.
  • Travelers are encouraged to attend Hawaiian Luaus, held daily on Maui at various locations, mostly at the larger Hotels. They feature Hula, Tahitian and Fire Knife Dancers, a Large Buffet, and an Open Bar. Usually they are 3 hours long and start around 5 pm. Visitors are also encouraged to watch Ulalena – a 90 minute show telling how Maui was formed with acrobats, musicians, and dancers. It has been performed in Lahaina Maui for over 8 years in a Theater built for the production.
  • Visit the Maui Community Farm Fair held every Saturday, where many farmers and local merchants sell their products
  • For authentic local dining experience, travelers can visit Longhi’s (featuring 2 locations) that has been in Maui for over 30 years ,Gannons (featuring 3 locations), serving food for over 25 years, Sansiei, serving good Japanese food in 2 locations, Café o’Lei – a good family restaurant with 4 locations, and Mama’s Fish House – the Island’s most popular eating place
  • Recommended excursions to take in Maui include helicopter rides, sunset sails, whale watching (seasonal, from November to April), and ziplines
